AIRES

AIRES / Academics

Define a question.
Put AI to work.

Investigate a question. Choose the right tools. Develop original AI research or innovation with expert mentors.

Explore Academics

Start with a field. Build toward original work.

01 / Academic Focuses

Explore your field.
Expand with AI.

Explore questions across engineering, health, business and society. Discover where AI can make a difference.

Robotics & Intelligent Machines

Who it’s for

For students interested in computer science, engineering, or robotics who want to explore how AI helps devices and information systems sense, process information, and respond.

Investigate how machines sense, move and interact with people. Connect engineering, computer science and design, then explore where AI can improve perception, control or responses in physical systems.

Biomedicine & Health

Who it’s for

For students interested in biology, statistics, or biomedical engineering who want to use AI to understand health data and improve health-related tools and processes.

Investigate questions about living systems, disease and healthcare. Connect biology, statistics, engineering and human behavior, then explore where AI can reveal patterns, support investigation or inform new approaches to care.

Business & Society

Who it’s for

For students interested in business, economics, policy, or social issues who want to examine how AI changes decisions, organizations, and everyday life.

Investigate how people, organizations and communities make decisions. Connect economics, psychology, policy and ethics, then explore where AI can deepen understanding, inform decisions or support useful products and services.

How your focus works

Your academic focus shapes the problems, applications, and skills you explore in seminars—and the research or solutions you develop in CoLab for your final project.

Hands-on development

Selected projects, particularly those involving hardware, will include collaboration with local makerspaces to support prototyping, testing, and product deployment.

Admissions note: AIRES generally does not require prior coding or robotics experience. However, students selecting Robotics & Intelligent Machines will have their prior coding and robotics experience assessed as part of the focus-selection process.

02 / The learning experience

The question shapes the learning.

Investigate questions and real-world problems, compare research methods and possible solutions, and refine your work through lectures, seminars and CoLab.

AIRES Advantage

CoLab

Focus meets practice.

CoLab is dedicated time to turn your academic interests into original work. Working independently or collaboratively, students define problems, develop research or prototypes, test ideas, and refine their work through mentor feedback. It is where academic focus, AI skills, and sustained project development come together.

College Admissions Sessions · AIRES Summer

Build a college profile
that stands out.

Shape your project story in one-to-one sessions with a college admissions counselor.

  1. 01

    A distinctive profile

Show your original thinking, creative decisions and interdisciplinary mindset. Explain the real-world need your project addresses and its potential social impact.

  2. 02

    A memorable activities-list entry

Describe your role, initiative and results through specific examples from your project.

  3. 03

    An authentic essay hook

Find a question, challenge or turning point worth writing about. Tell the story in your own voice.

03 / From learning to original work

Research paper or prototype: choose your pathway

Choose what you want to investigate further, test or develop.

Pathway 01

Research Pathway

Build evidence-based research

Develop a focused question, examine existing work and choose appropriate methods. Analyze evidence with a mentor, then explain your findings and limitations.

What you work toward

  1. 01An original research paper supported by appropriate methods, evidence, and analysis.
  2. 02A final presentation of findings, conclusions, limitations, and next steps.
  3. 03A clearer understanding of research design, analysis, and academic communication.

Publication support

Selected top research papers receive support for publication preparation and submission.

Presentation Matters

Explain your research question, methods, findings and limits. Practice answering questions with feedback from academic mentors and judges.

Pathway 02

Entrepreneurship & Innovation Pathway

Identify a need. Develop and test a solution.

Investigate a real need. Develop an AI-enabled prototype with mentors, test it with feedback and assess its potential value.

What you work toward

  1. 01A prototype, model, or entrepreneurial project that develops and tests a real-world solution.
  2. 02A pitch explaining the problem, intended users, value, feasibility, and evidence from testing.
  3. 03A final demonstration supported by feedback and clear next steps.

Funding for continued development

Selected top innovation projects receive up to $5,000 in funding.

Presentation Matters

Pitch your idea, demonstrate your prototype and explain your decisions. Practice answering questions with feedback from academic mentors and judges.

Beyond the program

Options for continuing your project

Both pathways offer opportunities for AI conference presentations.

Further support for competitions and publication is available upon request.

Project scope and technical complexity vary with students’ experience, program length, and progress.

Publication, funding, and conference participation depend on project quality, readiness, and further review. The scope and any additional fees for continued support will be confirmed separately.
