College Planning in the AI Era

Independent guidance for students and families. Learn how to present substantive project work honestly, explore AI-related university study, and understand changing rules for AI use in applications.

Projects and Application Profile

Substantive work as evidence.

Project work can demonstrate qualities that matter in applications — when the contribution is genuine and the student can explain it.

"The value comes from the student's actual contribution and ability to explain the work — not from the AIRES name or a guaranteed admissions advantage."
AIRES does not guarantee admissions advantages, publication, or funding outcomes.

What project work can demonstrate

  • Initiative. A project that started because the student chose to start it.
  • Intellectual depth. Evidence that the student thought seriously about the problem — not just listed tools.
  • Problem-solving. How the student navigated uncertainty, setbacks, or unexpected results.
  • Student ownership. What the student specifically contributed, not what their team or tools did.
  • Responsible AI use. Honest disclosure of how AI tools were used and what role they played.
  • Follow-through. Proof that the work continued past the idea stage into tangible output.
  • Measurable work and reflection. Data, feedback, or testing that shows the student evaluated their own work.
