What to packfor AIRES.

Pack for AIRES or Junior with a checklist of travel documents, study essentials and campus-specific items.

Prepare with confidence

Practical information.
A shared understanding.

Travel documents and identification

  • Government-issued photo ID & valid travel documents. Bring the identification and travel permissions required for your journey, especially when traveling by plane, train, or any method other than being driven by a parent or guardian. Check carrier requirements for minors.
  • Printed AIRES travel support letter. Carry your letter, when issued, alongside your travel documents if you are traveling independently. Contact Admissions for your copy before departure.
  • Itinerary, insurance & emergency contacts. Keep accessible copies of your enrollment information, travel arrangements, insurance details, and AIRES and family contact numbers.
  • Cell phone. Bring a phone with a U.S. number, or an international smartphone with WhatsApp installed and ready on check-in day. Arrange reliable connectivity in advance; if needed, purchase a compatible phone and SIM from a trusted retailer before arrival.

Laptop, chargers and learning supplies

  • Laptop, tablet, or equivalent. Bring a device suitable for your project work and its charger. Check with AIRES before relying on a tablet for activities that may need a laptop.
  • Universal travel adapter & chargers. Make sure your devices can connect safely to U.S. power outlets. Check device voltage compatibility; a plug adapter does not convert voltage.
  • Pens, pencils & notebooks. Bring notebooks or writing tablets for research notes, ideas, and feedback. Headphones can also be useful for project work.
  • One comfortable, presentable outfit for project presentations and visits.
  • Do not bring specialized tools, batteries, or equipment without checking travel restrictions and receiving program approval.

Clothing and everyday essentials

  • Clothing & comfortable shoes. Pack everyday clothing, walking shoes, light layers, shower footwear, an umbrella, and a light rain jacket.
  • Toiletries. Bring shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, a toothbrush, menstrual products, and any other personal-care essentials.
  • Water bottle & sunscreen. Drinking water is available, but students need to bring their own reusable bottle. Pack sunscreen for outdoor activities.
  • Medications in original containers. Keep prescription and over-the-counter medications in their original bottles or packaging with dosage information. Arrange any refrigeration or other storage needs with AIRES before arrival.
  • Hangers & laundry supplies. Bring hangers, a laundry bag, and travel-sized detergent or dryer sheets. Supplies can also be purchased near campus. Laundry is paid and app-enabled at Yale and UC Berkeley; Columbia laundry is free.

Provided for your room

A twin sheet set, bath towel, blanket, mattress, and one pillow will be provided. You are welcome to bring extra sheets or blankets for comfort.

Yale: pack a small handheld fan

Yale dormitory rooms are not air conditioned. Air conditioners are not permitted because the rooms are not electrically equipped for them. Bring a small handheld fan for personal comfort.

Air-conditioned auditoriums, common spaces, and classrooms are available where possible, along with access to drinking water. Follow your residential college’s final equipment guidance.

Pack thoughtfully

Avoid bringing valuables that are not needed for the program. Leave prohibited items at home and read your session’s final packing and conduct instructions before departure.

These guides support planning for Summer Residential, not non-residential programs. Your enrollment documents and final campus instructions contain the session-specific arrangements. about individual circumstances.
